Riding Holidays | Cambridgeshire - England
Cambridgeshire is one of the most important agricultural areas of the country. The largely flat land is ideal for arable crops and there are miles of farmland and small villages. Due to the predominately low lying landscape there are vast unbroken horizons. Much of the land is fenland, reclaimed from the original marsh state and crisscrossed by rivers and drainage channels. The rich peat soils are a significant factor in the emphasis on farmland. The county is also home to Britains oldest nature reserve - Wicken Fen which is one of the few remaining undrained areas and home to a vast array of wildlife.
One of the best areas for riding is Thetford Forest to the east where there is open access for horse riders within the Forestry Commission area. The patchwork of pines, heathland and broadleaf woodland provides an important refuge for a wide range of plants and animals, including red deer, roe deer, red squirrels, woodlarks and nightjars.
